She had been planning to join the torch relay for the Olympic Games which was held last year but pulled out because of COVID-19 concerns. Local Governor Seitaro Hattori hailed the life of Tanaka and stated he was “extremely saddened” at her demise. He stated in a statement on Monday that “I was looking forward to viewing Kane-san on this year’s Respect for the Aged Day (a national holiday in September) and commemorating together with her favorite chocolate and soda.”
